DAP told to sever ties with PAS in Selangor, Penang

Kota Kinabalu: DAP has come under pressure from Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties in Sabah and Sarawak to explain its latest moves. Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Teo Chee Kang (pic) said if DAP was serious in severing ties with PAS, it should distance itself from PAS in Selangor and Penang instead of Sabah and Sarawak where the party had no roots.

"I find it somewhat meaningless for the declaration by Sabah and Sarawak DAP to sever ties with the local PAS but their counterparts in Selangor and Penang are still working together in the same state governments," he said.

Both the call by DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang for a "Save Malaysia" coalition and Sabah DAP's move for a "new Pakatan Rakyat" were clear admissions that Pakatan had failed to work as a team, said Teo.

The fallout between DAP and PAS, said Teo, spoke volumes of Pakatan's vulnerability to exist as a political alliance.

"It reaffirms the fact that the very existence of Pakatan is premised on mere political convenience.

"Their conflicting ideologies and fundamental values were all along blinded by their common lust for power," he said.

DAP, he said, knew that no matter who the president was, PAS' agenda was to make Malaysia a theocratic, Islamic state.

"DAP merely denounced (PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul) Hadi Awang but would continue to work with PAS if that serves their political interests. This is clearly a political drama to hoodwink the people," said Teo.

DAP, he said, could not push the blame to others over PAS' hudud plan because it was the one who convinced its supporters to vote for the Islamist party by assuring them that it could not proceed with it.

In KUCHING, SUPP Youth has questioned Sarawak DAP's sincerity and integrity in quitting the State Pakatan, describing it as drama for political mileage.

Its Chief Tan Kai said DAP should have been aware that PAS had never given up its pursuit of hudud.

"By withdrawing from the state Pakatan, Sarawak DAP is evading responsibility and trying to shift the focus when they know that hudud has always been PAS' central agenda," he told reporters at SUPP headquarters here.

It was also surprising, said Tan, that the State DAP had pulled out while its national counterpart remained in Pakatan.

"Since State DAP Chief Chong Chieng Jen is also a national vice-chairman, we would like to ask why he refuses to work with the State PAS but is agreeable to work with the national PAS, bearing in mind that it is the national PAS which wants to implement hudud," he said.
