Kota Kinabalu: An attempt to launch a peaceful protest against the implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) at the Chong Tien Vun Park here was foiled by police on Sunday. A total of 11 activists from two non-governmental organisations – Gabungan NGO Menuntut Hak Rakyat Sabah (Gegar) and Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis) Sabah – were seen gathered at the park when they were asked to disperse. Gegar spokesperson Mohd Asraf claimed that they had not started the protest and were just writing on manila cards when they were approached by police officers and personnel and advised not to continue with their plans or risk being detained.

"There was a statement claiming that Sabahans agree with the implementation of GST, but we are here to show that we do not agree because we in Sabah are already burdened with the Cabotage Policy," he said when met later. "We urge the Government to postpone the implementation of GST and review the need for it because the prices of goods have already gone up even before GST is implemented," he said. Also present was Gamis spokesperson, Mohd Syafiq who agreed that GST should be postponed. Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
