Kota Belud: The younger generation holds the key towards achieving the nation's aspiration to be a developed country by 2020 and must shoulder the responsibility to continue the legacy of the founding fathers of the country. Upko Komulakan Chief, Ewon Benedick said the success of any country very much depends on the readiness of the young generation to accept the leadership baton and thereafter be able to meet the challenges of the day. "Youths in their 20s helped our founding fathers build this nation, and I see no reason why the young generation today cannot deliver the same level of participation in nation building.

"We are not the leaders of tomorrow, but very much leaders of today if we subscribe to progressive attitude," said Ewon.

"We are nearing the year 2020, but personally I think our youths have a long way to go to build a charismatic personally which is crucial to face greater challenges of the future where competition will be tougher.

"I have seen fellow young friends spending more time complaining about everything but did not take much action to strengthen his level of competency.

"We are entering an era where handicap system will no longer be practical. We must competent enough to run on the track of opportunities," he said.

Ewon, who is also the Political Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, said this when closing the Youth Explosion Race organised by the Youth Fellowship of SIB Taginambur Church in Kampung Tamu Darat.

A total of 100 participants took part in the event of 7km charity race event.

"I commended this kind of effort were young people gathers for the right reason and give unity and cooperation a chance to be instilled in their live.

"A competent and progressive youth that able to adopt and develop the philosophy of unity and cooperation within the society is what we all should aspire to be," said Ewon.

He assured that the freedom of religion is enshrined in the Federal Constitution and believers of any faith are free to organise events that give benefit to the nation.

"Your event today reflected what was enshrined in the Constitution. Let us then unite to protect this constitution and not allowing any effort for amendments that could further divide the multi-racial and multi-religious society in Malaysia. Join me for a democratic and progressive Malaysia that remain true to the spirit upon its formation," he added.

The annual event would be hosted by Youth Fellowship of SIB Kinabalu next year and expected to be held in Kampung. Kia, which Ewon assured his full support.
