Selangor: It's the weekend and the dawn of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) soon.So shoppers trouped into supermarkets, stocking up on what they felt they need from chocolates to detergent.

At some places, the shelves for toilet rolls and floor cleaner had been emptied out.

Social media manager Helena Singh, 29, said she waited almost an hour outside a supermarket here to avoid the crowd.

"There were so many people queueing already before the place was opened," she said when approached yesterday.

The mother of two children said she had made other purchases at another shopping mall last week for items such as toilet paper, detergent, household goods and chocolates, which cost her about RM600.

She hoped the Government would categorise more essential items in the zero-rated list.

Insurance agent Kelvin Chong, 36, said he wanted to restock on certain household items.

"We bought toilet cleaner, dish washing soap and canned food. We cook a lot at home and we are unsure which product would be charged GST so we decided to buy our groceries now," he said.

Former lecturer Abdul Wahab Ali, 64, said he had surveyed the prices at several supermarkets.

"I checked the prices first to ensure that I had the best deal. I bought vegetables, fish and imported biscuits as well as kitchenware."

"My wife told me to get it earlier before the GST starts," he said.
