Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Youth and Sports will suggest that the government invest in young drivers like Jazeman Jaafar to ensure Malaysia can have a Formula One (F1) driver in the future.Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Malaysians would certainly be more interested to see F1 races with our very own driver behind the wheels, just like former F1 driver Alex Yoong.

"I feel the rakyat want to see a local F1 driver on the grid and the fruits of such investment can be measured in terms of tourism, economic revenue other benefits. We want to have a F1 driver, Jazeman is quite close.

"However, we need to invest to mould a F1 driver. We must therefore decide whether to invest on him to turn him into a F1 driver or not," he told reporters after chairing National Youth Council meeting at the International Youth Centre (IYC) in Cheras, near here Monday.

Jazeman is currently racing in the World Formula Renault 3.5 Series with Asia Racing Team.

Khairy said the ministry also welcomed the extension Malaysia's contract to host the Formula One until 2018 at the Sepang International Circuit because it can boost the development of motorsport in the country.

"We must however, ensure that hosting the F1 will bring about various benefits to the country, especially in terms of tourism, motorsport industry and other related fields.

"But I feel with all the investment in F1, it's not a small investment, it's a big investment," he said. – Bernama
