Walkable city centre proposed

Kota Kinabalu: A proposal has been made to look into turning Kota Kinabalu city centre into a "Healthy and Walkable" city – the first of its kind in the country.The idea was mooted by Datin Paduka Dr. Dahlia bte Rosly, Director General, Federal Department of Town and Country Planning, Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government in the City Hall, here, Monday.

According to her, the idea for a "Healthy and Walkable City" is also in line with the sustainable planning for a health city and her Ministry, under the New Blue Ocean Strategy" is looking to create a "Walkable City" in the country.

Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir who welcomed such proposal said this is in line with Kota Kinabalu Public Transport Traffic Master Plan, to convert the road along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens into a one-way street.

Dr. Dahlia said the idea of a "walkable" city is to create a liveable city improving the quality of living of the people, while spinning economic activities at same the time.

If found workable for implementation here, she expressed her hopes to see its implementation by year end, as according to her funding for the said project would be channelled directly to the City Hall from her Department.

Accompanying the Director-General at the courtesy call were Federal Department of Town and Country Planning, Deputy Director General Planning, Dato Dr. Doblani bin Mijan, Deputy Director General Development, Haji Zainuddin Ahamad and Chief Assistant Director, Hasnan Ibrahim. Also present were Kota Kinabalu City Hall's City Planning Director, Alijus Hj. Sipil and Senior City Planning officer, Stanley Chong.
