Kuching: The Pan Borneo Highway which the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected launch will provide a better road system for Sabah and Sarawak.Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem said the readiness of the Federal Government to provide a substantial allocation to finance the project must be appreciated by the people.

"Throughout 50 years, the government has been actively implementing development projects in the state, such as providing basic amenities, especially road connection, to ensure more areas are accessible.

"The launching of the Pan Borneo Highway is a blessing that we should be grateful for.

"We thank the Prime Minister and the Federal Government for their continuous efforts to bring in more development to the state," said Adenan.

Adenan, who is also the State Resource Planning and Environment Minister, said the construction of the highway would stimulate economic activities, especially in rural areas, thus improving the living standards of the communities there.

He said the journey from Sematan to Lawas, which took 13 to 14 hours, was expected to be reduced by half after the completion of the highway. This also meant that travel cost would be lower.

"We are optimistic that the highway will stimulate socio-economic development due to logistical constrainst," he said.

In the future development of the state, Adenan said there would not be any major challenges or difficulties as the state and federal governments were from the same party – Barisan Nasional.

He said the development in the state was an ongoing effort by implementing projects that had been promised.

When asked if the launching of the RM27 billion highway was a "preparation" for the state polls, he said it was part of the development, to meet and fulfil the demands and needs of the people.

"This was promised in the last election and the Prime Minister wants to implement it in the soonest time possible for the comfort and convenience of the people.

Adenan, who celebrated his first-year anniversary as Sarawak's fifth Chief Minister on March 1, expressed his appreciation for the support given by the people. He hoped the construction of the highway would reduce accident rates in the state, particularly involving fatalities.

"Although the fatality rate is not alarming, drivers and road users should always follow the rules.

"Don't driver over the speed limit, make sure everyone is safe on the road."
