Kota Kinabalu: The KDM Football League has still a long way to go but Papar's undisputable forte made it endearingly the top team at the moment.A 2-1 win over resilient Tambunan last weekend stamped their position as leaders and at the same time maintained their six-point gap over Keningau who were gifted the three points when Kota Marudu failed to appear in the scheduled match to also maintain their second place on the table.

Keningau had earlier won the first leg match with Kota Marudu, 3-0.

In the Papar versus Tambunan match, Papar took full advantage of playing on its own backyard and resulted in them scoring two goals in half time.

Tambunan desperately tried all tricks it knew to subdue Papar but the stalwart leaders were in no mood to compromise.

However, Ian James Wong of Tambunan, reduced the margin just three minutes before half time.

In the second half, both teams made numerous probes into the opponents' goal without any luck.

With the win, Papar now have 47 points while Keningau, 41.

In another match, Inanam had to dig deep into its reserves to conquer bottom-of-the-table Penampang B to ensure they remain within sights of the leaders' heels.

They surged ahead with two goals in the first half before Penampang B reduced the score line.

In the second half, Papar scored another goal while Penampang B could only muster one more goal for the final result 3-2.

The result saw Inanam climbing up one rung to tenth place with 28 points.

Kota Belud and Bandaraya maintained their position in third and fourth positions after winning their respective matches.

Kota Belud won 5-3 over Penampang A while Bandaraya were handed the full three points after Pitas failed to turn up in their arranged match at Sukma Padang C.

Both Kota Belud and Bandaraya have equal 37 points but distanced in positions through goal difference.

Elsewhere, Sandakan shocked KDM Pusat when they defeated the latter 2-1 in a match anticipated by many would be in favour of KDM Pusat.

The saying that "the ball is round" aptly described the match and totally destroyed the pundits' prediction.

Seventh positioned Putatan, on the other hand, defeated Kiulu 4-2 while Kimanis drew 1-1 with Kemabong.
