Kota Kinabalu: Nitespots are adopting a "wait and see" attitude before implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), beginning today. Some said they will increase the prices of the alcoholic beverages if suppliers raise theirs.

A pub and karaoke owner of "The Bank", Omar Len said the situation was still vague.

"We are waiting for the latest quotation from our suppliers.

"Beer and wine pricing will be slightly higher. The biggest concern for me is the liquor pricing which I presume will increase.

"I will try to maintain my workers' salaries as I feel it is not fair to reduce where everything now is getting more expensive," he said.

Omar said he is currently using old stock, which is presumed to last until March 31.

Another outlet in Warisan Square, "Hot Rod", also decided to impose new pricing for their alcoholic beverages.

"Setting the new pricing which is higher than before is hard for us… but we have to do it to keep up with the new national tax policy.

"The liquor prices will be most affected as the distributors' pricing of the items are higher compared to other beverages," said John, a shareholder.

John said if their business is affected badly by the introduction of GST, they may opt to reduce their work force.

Theodora Watson who operates "Shamrock" also said there will be new pricing for their alcoholic beverages.

"Sadly, these kind of higher pricing will be passed down to the customers which is worrying but leave me with no other choice.

"I am also worried about the workers' salaries and will do my best to maintain my workforce," she said.

On food, she said she will maintain the prices for now as there is no clear indication on what ingredients have been newly taxed.

The owner of "The Lush", Jason Lim said: "We will have new pricing in all our beers and wines. Unfortunately, the new pricing will be higher as the distributors have increased the prices.

"As for the food, I cannot increase the prices because I do not know how it will affect my business yet.

"However, I will try my best to maintain my workers' salaries," he said.
