K'gau Hosp denies it can't be reached

Keningau: District Hospital Director Dr. Riduan Hashim denied allegations that the hospital is difficult to reach. He said this in response to the case involving a 38-year-old woman who died and her younger sister hospitalised allegedly from food poisoning after consuming contaminated Nasi Lemak bought from a stall. "Even on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays, I am always close to the patients," he said, adding that the post mortem and toxicology report on the March 10 incident was still under investigation.

He said patients faced with any problems can contact the hospital and he hoped hospital staff would pay serious attention and cooperate with patients who come to the hospital for treatment. Dr. Riduan said this when contacted by the Daily Express at about 3pm. A spokesperson for the siblings' family, James Edward claimed they went to the hospital several times to get the post mortem report but have yet to receive the report. It was learnt that the Keningau Hospital Director has contacted the family and has conducted a meeting the hospital staff on the matter.

The hospital assured that the matter would be addressed accordingly. On allegations that they are not allowed to contact the Hospital Director, Dr. Riduan said it was not true because regardless of time and whether it was a public holiday or not, patients can always call the hospital or him personally.

He reminded hospital staff to continue giving the best service to every patient. The new Keningau Hospital located some six kilometres from Keningau town was built on Sept 3, 1999 and completed in March 31, 2003. Due to a fire, the construction works had to be postponed until October 31, 2003 and operations were relocated from the old hospital to the new one. However Keningau has a population of about 178,000 not including nearby districts such as Tenom which has a population of 60,000, Tambunan with 50,000, Nabawan with 46,000 and patients coming from the Interior. There are times when the hospital is packed with patients however the hospital is still able to accommodate the patients.
