Kudat: Personal safety is a priority, more so among schoolchildren."There must be no compromise in the efforts to share and spread the various preventive messages on personal safety among these vulnerable group as they are the nation's number one asset," said Assistant Industrial Development Minister Datuk Bolkiah Ismail.

He was speaking when launching a safety campaign for 520 pupils sponsored by Talisman Malaysia Limited in Kudat last Thursday.

"It is everyone's responsibility to play a role on personal safety and I must commend and thank Talisman Malaysia Limited for sponsoring this safety campaign among pupils in several districts in Sabah since its launch in 2013," Bolkiah said.

The Kudat campaign represented Talisman Malaysia's first series this year. It will be followed by two more campaigns in Penampang and Kota Belud districts later this year, in its bid to reach out to more than 1,500 pupils.

He also lauded the commitment by the District Education Office and schools in supporting the campaign.

The campaign involved talks by the Police, Fire and Rescue Department as well as a special interactive video created by Talisman Malaysia for the young participants to learn hands-on about the risks on personal safety at home, school and public places.

The participants were asked to share safety tips and guidelines with their family members, friends and schoolmates in order to spread the message. Accidents arising from lapses in safety measures incur unfortunate losses – particularly to families and properties involved.

Bolkiah said there should be no compromise on personal safety, adding that criminal cases involving children calls for appropriate measures to ensure their safety.

The government welcomes the role played by private companies such as Talisman Malaysia on holding safety awareness campaigns and the importance of personal safety.

Talisman Malaysia's Exploration Manager, Scott Ferguson, who spoke at the campaign explained that safety comes in their business operations.

They believe that safety should extend outside work.

"It was against this background that we initiated this Safety Campaign in 2013 among young schoolchildren as they were the most vulnerable group," he said, adding that some 5,000 schoolchildren from several districts in Sabah and Labuan have benefited from the campaign so far.
