Dragon Boat Race: More teams and more money

Kota Kinabalu: The 2nd Sabah FCAS International Dragon Boat Race 2015 promises to be more exciting with more participating teams and an increased prize money of RM80,000 up for grabs.Being organised by the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) led by Datuk Dr T.C. Goh, it will be held on June 13 (preliminary) and 14 (finals) at the Likas Bay, here.Event Organising Chairperson, Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen said there will be foreign teams from China and Singapore this time around.ADVERTISEMENT "We have communicated with prospective teams in Guangdong Province's Guang Zhou City, Huizhou City, Qingyuan City, Dongguan City, Foshan City, Jiangmen City, Taishan City and Hubei Province's Wuhan City. We expect the number of participating teams (local and overseas) to exceed 112 (last year's figure)."And the total prize monies has been raised from RM47,750 last year to RM80,000 this year," she told a press conference after a meeting chaired by Chief Organising Chairman, Datuk Jimmy Yong Kyok Ming. A much-coveted prize will be the Sabah Head of State Trophy that also carries with it RM10,000 cash (first place), RM5,000 (second place) and RM2,000 (third place).On top of it, she said there will be a photography competition, a cuisine and delicacies cooking show and family dishes exhibition in addition to the dumpling cooking competition (held last year).According to Wong, there will be 10 categories, namely Sabah Head of State Trophy, Sabah FCAS Dragon Trophy, Breast Cancer Survivor Trophy, Kinabalu Dragon Trophy (Men's Team) and Kinabalu Dragon Trophy (Mixed Team) for international dragon boat teams; Sabah Chief Minister Trophy and Kinabalu Dragon Trophy (Junior Team – 20 years & below) for Malaysian Dragon Boat Teams; and FCAS Trophy (Mixed Team) confined to members of the United Sabah Chinese Community Associations of Kota Kinabalu (USCCA), FCAS Trophy (Men's Team) & FCAS Trophy (Mixed Team) for Malaysian Chinese Dragon Boat Teams.ADVERTISEMENT As a prelude to the Athletes Oath-Taking Ceremony and Preliminary Race on June 13 (Saturday), there will be a welcome dinner for participating teams on June 12 (Friday) at the Sabah Hakka Hall with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman as guest of honour.Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun will grace the Sunset Beach Party on June 13 at the Likas Bay. On June 14 (Sunday), the final race will take place and Head of State, Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Haji Juhar Datuk Hj Mahiruddin will witness the Dumpling Throwing Event before giving away prizes at the closing ceremony.
