Kota Kinabalu: More than 1,000 dengue cases had been reported in Sabah as of March 28 this year.According to Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong, the number of cases increased by 729 compared to the corresponding period last year.

"And of this figure, there were two deaths reported and the victims were from Kota Kinabalu and Semporna," he said, adding that Kota Kinabalu and Penampang recorded the highest number of dengue cases.

"There were 567 dengue cases reported in Kota Kinabalu, accounting for an increase of 463 cases from the same period in 2014. In Penampang, there were 156 cases reported, up by 150 compared to the same period in 2014," he said in reply to the Kuala Penyu and Likas Assemblymen in a question and answer session at the State Assembly sitting, here, Thursday.

Yong said the Health Department was monitoring the dengue situation in Sabah apart from taking proactive measures through "Ops Mega" (Dengue Control and Prevention Mega Operation) in Kota Kinabalu and Penampang districts.

"The operation started on March 1 this year involving 174 health officers throughout the State comprising 43 control and prevention teams, six entomology teams, seven health promotion teams as well as a Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 (Amendment 2000) enforcement team.

"Besides that, the department also carries out fogging activities once a week and repeats it within seven to 10 days from the first fogging exercise in dengue-hit areas, he said.

The four dengue-hit localities in Likas, namely Kg Likas, Taman Kemajuan Likas, Kg Likas Lama and Kg Cenderamata 2, are currently under control, he added.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Zakaria Mohd Edris, also said the government for now has no plans to build low-cost houses at Kg Kopungit as it had been gazetted as a village reserve.
