Kota Kinabalu: The body of an elderly man was discovered inside a room on the second floor of a shophouse in Sinsuran, here, Thursday. The man, identified by police as 72-year-old Hong Koh Wa, was said to have stayed in the unit which he converted into several rooms and rented out to tenants.

A tenant who did not want to be identified claimed that the last she saw him was on Friday.

"I saw him at a coffee shop downstairs and return to his room in the evening," she said, adding that she has been renting a room in the unit for the past two years.

"He was a concerned landlord but would keep to himself most of the time," she said.

Another tenant claimed that he did not see the man for six days.

"I sensed something was amiss when a strong stench came from his room but I was afraid to look into the room and decided to call his son who works in Singapore," he said, adding that the landlord had pasted his son's number in the premises which tenants could call in case of an emergency.

Acting City Police Chief Supt Mohd Azhar Hamin said a police team rushed to the scene after being alerted of the discovery at about 9.19am.

Preliminary investigations showed the man was taking medication for diabetes and high blood pressure.

Azhar said early investigations showed no elements of foul play and that the case is classified as sudden death.

The body has been sent for post mortem and his family members were alerted of the incident.
