Labuan: The Labuan Fisheries Department (LFD) on Thursday disclosed that water, fish and shellfish samples taken from Labuan's waters due to the red tide phenomenon, are free from Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum (dinoflagellates), which pose a health risk to humans. The results of the sample analyses were issued by the Likas Fisheries Research laboratory on Wednesday.

LFD Director Anuar Salam Sulaiman said his department had been monitoring the phenomenon for the last two weeks over the waters of Sg Miri, Patau-Patau and Rancha-Rancha. "We have done our part and our level best to monitor the situation strictly, and we found the samples taken in these prone areas to be not affected by the phenomenon," he said in a statement.

However, he said, the warning for extra precaution was still on and he advised the public to be vigilant by cleaning thoroughly seafood before consuming them. "We will issue another statement if the waters of Labuan are totally free from the risk of the red tide phenomenon, but until it is clear, the public must take extra precaution," he said.

Among the seafood listed as still posing a risk are all types of shellfish, and kembong and bubuk fish.

"We would also like to remind the people not to consume too much crabs and kara prawns (udang kara). We can still consume them, but to clean them thoroughly and the heads must be removed," said Anuar.

He said the more than 200 dead fish found in the cage off Kg Bebuloh were still being analysed and the results expected to be out by Friday.

Two women, aged 59 and 36, were treated as outpatients last week at Labuan Hospital after being diagnosed to have the symptoms of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). Labuan Health Director Dr Ismail Ali advised people to adhere to the reminders issued by the Fisheries Department on the phenomenon.

He advised those with early symptoms of PSP after eating seafood like tingling of the lips and tongue, followed by a pins-and-needles pricking sensation on the legs and hands, headache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea to seek treatment at the nearest hospital or clinic.
