Kuala Lumpur: New Zealand is looking to expand its food service industry in Malaysia as 75 per cent of exports to the country comes under this category. New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Malaysia and Brunei Matt Ritchie said to introduce the island country's food products to Malaysian restaurants and hotels, a food fair, "Food Connection", would be held at end-April.

"This is in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of New Zealand's formal relationship with Asean.

"The present 'Taste New Zealand' food fair is more for the retail industry and the public, while 'Food Connection' is aimed at restaurants and hotels," he told a press conference after the launch of "Taste New Zealand", here Thursday.

"Later this year, business delegates from New Zealand will visit Malaysia to explore business opportunities," he said.

Ritchie said the current export of goods and services takes up 30 per cent of New Zealand's Gross Domestic Product and the hope is to achieve 40 per cent by 2025.

"To achieve the target, we will ensure by 2018 that every New Zealand company exporting its products to Malaysia, will increase revenue by at least five per cent annually," he said.

At the same press conference, Assistant General Manager of AEON's food line merchandising division, Hiroko Yamada said she expects a 30 per cent sales increment for New Zealand food products.

"This is the fourth year that AEON is organising the 'Taste New Zealand' food fair and sales of New Zealand's food products are in the double-digits every year," she said.
