Keningau aim to make up ground on leaders

Kota Kinabalu: Keningau certainly have in the back of their mind to trim the gap with leaders Papar in the KDM Football League when they meet Penampang A at IPG football field in Keningau today (Saturday). With only six points separating the leaders, Keningau surely do not want to miss the opportunity to close the space.Given this break, it is something that Keningau will unquestionably relish.ADVERTISEMENT The trump card on its hand – a two-match advantage over Papar who have played 21 matches into the season, will come in handy at this moment. And if they bagged the maximum points, Keningau have the opportune moment to come really close within touch range with Papar. But only if Papar were tied or lost in the match with third placed Kota Belud with 40 points. And Papar are not about to relinquish their grip on the top spot. But Kota Belud are neither throwing in the towel when they have their sights trained on the leaders.ADVERTISEMENT In retrospect, it would be an interesting weekend where the outcomes will make or break the teams.Papar have 48 points while Keningau, 42. Nevertheless, Papar are quite far ahead and the only thing that could slide their claim to the top prize is if they commit a mistake.

However, Papar are not a foolhardy team. They know that it is well endowed in all departments and that only a miracle could loosen their grip from the pole. And there is nothing, not even Keningau that have the audacity to take that away from its clasp. On the other hand, they must remember that they must give more than 100 per cent if they wish to emerge the victor over Kota Belud. In the first round, they were tied 3-3.Having said all that, attention must be given to former leaders Penampang A, who most assuredly have no wish to be kind and generous. After all, the saying – may the best man win, certainly rings some truth even if they do not pose a direct threat to the top two teams. With 29 points in the bag, they do not even come close to Bandaraya, who sit on fourth rung with 38 points. But it is all a matter of pride and honour for Penampang A who possess all the qualities of a down-but-not-out fighter.Irrespective of the scenario, both Keningau and Papar must win if they insist on keeping their dreams alive.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
