Tawau: Local bus operators and owners here have called on the government to extend the age limit of transportation vehicles from 30 years to until they are no longer operable. Tawau Public Bus Transportation Association Chairman Mohd Surianyah Salleh pleaded to regulators on Thursday to limit the use of transportation vehicles based on the integrity of the vehicle, and that it should be deemed operationally safe with permits, insurance and road tax.

He noted the destinations of the short run bus services at present do not burden the vehicles.

"We appeal the government to consider this matter on the basis of economic factors of the bus owners and the operators who are incapable of replacing or buying new buses due to deteriorating income as more people now own their own vehicles.

"The average income is around RM40 or RM50 a day or the most RM80 for a distance of 48 kilometres," he said.

Surianyah said all the members and drivers also had family to support on top of the cost of damage, maintenance, tyre, fuel, salary of driver and conductor to retain their operations.

"Our vehicles are all approved by Puspakom at present … we will back down and do away with such buses if our old buses are no longer useable, dangerous and Puspakom disapproves it," he said.

He said a letter had already been submitted by the association to extend the age limit of short run buses in Tawau to the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board in Sabah.

The association at present has 249 registered members with 157 owners and operators of short run buses, with some 324 buses currently operating in Tawau.
