77 inspected during op

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 77 people, including 20 women, were inspected during an integrated operation in the city, here, Saturday. The seven-hour operation which began at about 10pm comprised 46 officers and personnel from the city traffic police, Road Transport Department, National Anti-Drugs Agency and City Hall.

The purpose of the operation was to monitor and curb illegal racing activities in the city as well as to eradicate unethical attitude of motorists who are fond of playing loud music in public places.

The operation was conducted in four locations identified to be hangout spots for such motorists, particularly youths, driving Kancil, Viva, Kenari or Myvi, namely in Anjung Senja in front of Promenade, Waterfront in front of Hyatt Hotel, Likas Bay Park and Tanjung Aru second beach.

A total of 66 vehicles, comprising 40 cars, five four-wheel-drive and 21 motorcycles were rounded up and brought to the city traffic police station for inspection where 26 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.

A motorist was detained for having exceeded the allowed alcohol limit.

A total of six motorcycles were also confiscated for various traffic offences.

Meanwhile, the Road Transport Department issued a total of 15 notices to errant motorists, while a total of 57 people were brought in to have their urine tested by the National Anti-Drugs Agency and out of this figure, two men, aged 26 and 27, were tested positive for drugs.

Illegal racing, particularly Mat Rempit menace is seen to have reduced significantly thanks to joint efforts and aggressive policing by all enforcement agencies involved.
