Ministry hopes Yoyo meet here will become a celebrated event

Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Tourism and Culture Ministry (Motac) hopes that the first ever Sabah Open Yoyo Championship (SOYC) would become a celebrated event in the years to come.Motac Director, Ag Ahmad Zaki Abu Bakar said he was proud with the outcome the event and hope the competition may continue to strive and become bigger.

"I am very happy that we have highly skilled youngsters in this competition. We are very proud and we are looking forward for next year, maybe we can make it bigger and to a higher level.

"I can see the potential and the ministry gives its full support to this programme," he said at the closing ceremony of SOYC, Sunday.

SOYC co-organiser Timothy Wong said there were 20 people from across Malaysia and Brunei that joined the competition of which six were from Sabah.

"In Sabah, the yoyo scene is starting to go up. In our club itself, we only have about 20 plus people," he said, adding that the winner from the competition will compete in the Malaysian Yoyo Championship at the end of May in Kuala Lumpur.

"The winner from the Malaysian Yoyo Championship would then compete in the Asia Pacific Yoyo Championship."

The championship which was divided into five categories and the Single A (one hand string tricks) was won by Ridzwan Ngataman from Brunei and first runner-up by Muhammad Khairsyah Othman, also from Brunei, followed by Muhammad Shaifuddin Rosli from Terengganu.

In the Y Division category, Ryan Han from Sarawak became champion followed by Azim Jameel from Brunei and Sarawakian, Wesley Lim.

In the Side Division category, Adi Raihan Mahmud from Brunei won for the Long Sleeper (long yoyo spinning).

Muhammad Khairsyah Othman from Brunei won both the Eli Hop and Blindfold 1A Division.
