Kota Kinabalu: Elephants are smart animals. They are bound to avenge those who encroach into their territory. Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun on Friday found out about the vengeful nature of pachyderms from local researchers who had witnessed the destruction of crops by them.

"It's something like if you start the war than we will be getting back at you," he said.

A herd of elephants can destroy up to 200 to 300 acres of crops in what Masidi described "in a night of fun", literally stepping over or bulldozing over the plants.

Out of the destruction, only five per cent are consumed, sort of to teach farmers a lesson, he said.

Now, for the people the elephants are a threat to their crops, but to the elephants, it is people who encroach into their territory.

Masidi said more and more elephants are now displaced or killed as a result of this human-animal conflict and instances are growing more rampant by the day.

"It is happening every day in the last couple of months and just yesterday I received a report that they have found another case (displaced elephants)," he said.
