Semporna: The Seaweed Agro Tourism project implemented in Ligit-Ligitan near here has provided a regular income to participants and freed them from the shackles of poverty. The head of the participants, Nurali Menduali said through the project implemented in 2011 under the Semporna Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK), 25 participants managed to earn a monthly income of between RM700 and RM1,000.

He said before joining the project, he and the other participants did not have a steady income and worked as fishermen who depended heavily on their marine catch.

"The revenue from the project enables us to earn a living to support our family, especially to buy groceries and send the children to school," he told Bernama here.

The island of Ligit-Ligitan is a 20-minute boat ride from Semporna town and the coastal areas are cultivated with seaweed stretching for about 100 hectares.

Nurali said each participant worked on an area of four hectares with equipment and seaweed seeds provided by the Semporna PPK.

He welcomed the government's efforts to build a seaweed processing plant in Semporna, following which the seaweed industry would generate more income for residents in the region.

He said with the processing plant, seaweed prices in the area could be controlled and seaweed cultivators would find it easier to market their produce.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, during his visit to Semporna on April 12, said the government intended to build a seaweed processing plant in Semporna to overcome price control which was currently manipulated by a factory.
