Selangor: Former national men's doubles shuttlers, Lim Khim Wah and Hoon Thien How received a major boost in a bid to play for 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, as they signed a sponsorship amounting to RM1 million Thursday. They were sponsored by three companies – local badminton apparel company, Absolute Protech Sports (M) Sdn Bhd; fertiliser company, Agromate (M) Sdn Bhd and a property developer company, M101 Holdings Sdn Bhd for a two-year period.

Managing Director of Absolute Protech Sports (M) Sdn Bhd, Ronnie Chong signed on behalf of the company while Agromate (M) Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Raymond Tang Quee Huang and Executive Director of M101 Holdings Sdn Bhd, Datuk Chua Eng Pu represented their companies, respectively.

Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony, Chong said they agreed to sponsor the duo as they believed that the shuttlers still have a bright future in the international badminton arena besides vying to market their products at international level on a larger scale.

"This fund will be managed by us. In this contract, it is stated that they will play a minimum 15 international tournament (per year) but we will not forced them if they are unable to compete in all tournaments," he said.

Chong said the pair would get an incentive if they managed to showcase a commendable performance in each tournament they competed.

A potential coach would also be hired to train the duo, he said.

Meanwhile, Khim Wah said they wanted to achieve a better result in the upcoming New Zealand Grand Prix Gold Open from April 28 until May 3, as they had only managed to enter the quarter final at the recently concluded China Masters.

"We hope to do well in the next tournament to boost our hopes to play in 2016 Olympic Games. I would like to thank our sponsors for giving us trust and hopefully, this sponsorship will motivate us to do well in every tournament that we participate," he said.

Echoing his view, Thien How admitted that they need to work harder if they want to play in the 2016 Olympic Games.

"I have my personal target under this sponsorship. We did not have much ranking points at the moment, so we have to play more tournaments in a bid to qualify for the Olympic Games," said the 28-year old shuttler.

The duo currently play under a private club banner, Cheras Badminton Club after they decided to quit the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), last February. – Bernama
