312 premises in campaign to reduce plastic bags: Mayor

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 312 premises have signed up for the Plastic Bag Usage Reduction Campaign since its launching in June last year, said Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir.He said the campaign was not aimed at banning the total usage of plastic but rather at educating the public on proper disposal. "The message we are trying to push forth in this campaign is for the proper usage and disposal of plastic bags in accordance to the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle concept.ADVERTISEMENT "By reducing our usage of plastic bags, we would be more involved in reusing available sources or reusing our plastic bags."He said this at the litter-free school accreditation and reduce plastic bags usage campaign at SK Luyang, here, Thursday.The campaign called for no plastic bags to be used on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.Meanwhile, Madingkir congratulated SK Luyang on their on-going efforts and support towards the clean campaigns that City Hall has been organising. ADVERTISEMENT "I have been informed that SK Luyang has not only been actively involved in the anti-litterbug campaign but other campaigns as well."They have responded to our campaigns by actively practising recycling, the 3R, Clean Toilets and also reducing the usage of plastic bags at the canteen by using plates instead."

The accreditation was part of a strategy of the campaign by City Hall to realise its aspiration to become a litter-free city.He added that including SK Luyang there were now 155 premises that have been given accreditation as litter-free areas.Madingkir said City Hall will continuously monitor the state of the areas from time to time to ensure that the areas were still litter-free.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
