Govt to boost ownership rate to over 50pc

Kuala Lumpur: The federal government is committed to building more affordable homes for the rakyat and to increase the current 50 per cent ownership rate.Deputy Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, compared almost 85 per cent of Singaporeans were home-owners.

"To improve the ownership rate, the government has pledged to supply one million affordable houses by 2018 and it has started to mobilise the public and private sectors to achieve the agenda.

"Under the government flagship, there are various programmes to assist players and buyers in providing and purchasing affordable houses," she said at the National Affordable Housing Summit 2015 here Thursday.

Halimah said the programmes included efforts by Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia Bhd (PR1MA) and Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB) and through People's Housing Programme and Private Affordable Ownership Housing schemes.

"All of these programmes are providing houses with the price range below RM400,000," she said.

PR1MA chief operating officer, Aminuddin Abdul Manaf, said PR1MA was set to build 13,000 units of affordable homes this year from the total of 500,000 to be completed by 2018. – Bernama

"Our homes have always been priced between RM100,000 and a maximum of RM400,000. Joint-ventures with private developers are among measures that we have adopted to deliver the require units," he said on the sidelines of the summit.

Meanwhile, SPNB managing director, Datuk Dr Kamarul Rashdan Salleh, said SPNB would build 20,000 houses this year, from the 123,000 it was supposed to deliver by 2018, adding that they have built 32,948 people-friendly units nationwide since 2002.

The inaugural summit is initiated by Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute, and Rei Group of Companies, to evaluate the challenges, opportunities and trends in affordable housing in the country. – Bernama
