Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Rhinos suffered their first home defeat of the season at the hands of Kedah after a thrilling Premier League tie ended 1-2 to the away side at Likas Stadium on Friday night.Second half substitute Mohd Shafiq Ahmad came through as the hero for the Canaries after his goal deep into injury time grabbed all three points.

The Rhinos started the match without their influential skipper, El Hadji Diouf who was suspended.

Despite that, the home side showed early determination to win the game as they only needed 39 seconds to score the first goal of the match.

Eamon Zayed intercepted a pass deep in the Kedah's half and sweetly sliced a pass in between the opponent's defenders for Joel Chianese to slot home past Abdul Hadi Hamid.

Right after the goal, Kedah controlled the match for the next 30 minutes but were unable to find the equaliser despite having more attempts on goal.

Kedah's striker, Chidi Edeh had a few efforts went just wide while teammate Sandro Da Silva also was unable to convert from point blank range.

Kedah's best chance in the first half came from Da Silva's free kick from the edge of the penalty box that went just inches wide of the top corner.

The home side then responded quickly with Zuraindey Jumai splitting a through ball for Eamon whose shot was brilliantly saved by Abdul Hadi.

The Kedah number one then got down quickly to save Abdoulaye Faye's header from the resulting corner kick.

The former Senegal international had another header cleared off the line by Liridon Krasniqi just before half time after an inch perfect free kick from Leopold Otong.

Sabah's second half misfortune started just two minutes after the restart when Kedah equalised.

Chidi was found unmarked in the box and the big striker made no mistake from close range, blasting past helpless keeper, Fazli Paat.

With the score level at 1-1, both teams kept possession and had fair shares of efforts on goal.

The last 10 minutes of the game proved to be a nail bitter with both teams pushing hard for that three precious points.

But it was Kedah that had the last laugh of the game when playmaker, Liridon's long ball found Chidi at the edge of Sabah's penalty box who then slipped a pass for Syafiq to blast home into the top corner.

The defeat demoted Sabah into third in the league, two points behind Kedah and four points behind leaders, Terengganu T-Team who had won their match against KL SPA Putrajaya FC, 2-0 earlier.

The injured Rhinos will now face JDT II away in their next Premier League match on May 1.
