Kota Kinabalu: The Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) rugby team is gearing up for the Kota Kinabalu Division One Rugby League here.

Known as UMS Heron, second division league champion last season, they have been training actively and holding several series of friendly matches as preparation to ensure players' fitness and performance is maintained.

Head Coach Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin said the friendly matches also helps players to familiarise with the game.

"Fitness training and cardiovascular endurance is also done to strengthen the team," he said.

Dr. Mohamad however, does not push aside the possibility of a stiff competition and said UMS Heron will focus more on strengthening the team and not only on clinching the champion title alone.

"Even though our Fiji player has completed his studies, I believe the team has the mental strength and capability of playing well," he added.

Meanwhile, Team Captain Deirdre Daryl Dasing said he and all members of the team aim to emerge champion and to lift the UMS team to a higher level.

"I believe the combination of old and new players will form an aura which has incredible strength," he said in full confidence.
