Kota Kinabalu: Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) will soon install virtual teller machines to help overcome congestion problems at its premises. The instalment of the machines will coincide with the bank's rebranding this October to enhance its corporate image as well as for customer convenience.

"There will be a change in our colour scheme as well as logo but I will not go into the details.

However, I believe this will definitely change the people's perspective on us," said Sabah BSN Business Director Laudin Sundang.

The virtual teller machines will allow users to be in contact with other tellers from different district branches via video conferencing during peak hours.

"The management has also suggested to abolish the RM1 service charge among BSN account holders who withdraw their cash from other banks via the MAS Electronic Payment System (MEPS)," he said, adding that there are 472 BSN agents to date.

"We plan to have 600 BSN agents throughout the State this year for the convenience of our users. Currently, we have about 600,000 to 700,000 active account holders," he said during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with four selected primary schools in the State for the BSN School Carnival 2015 which will be held from May 1 to Nov 20.

The signing ceremony, which involved SK Lohan, Ranau, SK St.Francis Xavier, Keningau, SK Tg Batu Keramat, Tawau and SK Pekan Kudat II, Kudat, was held at Sky Hotel, here, Friday.

"We hope to have another MoU with two more schools this year and we want to get the Chinese schools in the State to be involved as well. We will try our best and with the cooperation of State Education Director Datuk Jame Alip, I believe we will be able to make it happen," he said.

He said they planned to increase the number of schools but faced problems with limited resources.

"We have 31 branches Statewide and only four to five staff per branch.

Most of the support we received is from Kota Kinabalu. However, this will not hinder us from increasing the number of schools, he said.

The carnival, according to Laudin aimed to help schools increase their funds through charity sales.

"We will sponsor RM10, 000 to each of the selected schools to run all activities throughout the carnival.

"The amount is inclusive of the cash prizes for the talent and colouring competitions. The cash will be deposited directly into the winners' account," he said. The programme is also part of their social responsibility to promote the culture of saving cash among pupils through the BSN Saving Club, Young Savers Club (KPM) and Students Savings Encouragement Schemes (SGSP).

Both the KPM and SGSP are for those aged between 7 and 21. Students are required to open a BSN account with a minimum saving of RM150.

"There were 220,000 KPM members with more than RM250 million in savings up to Dec 31 last year. In 2014, the total savings for SGSP was more than RM514 million, showing an increase of 37 per cent from the previous year.

"In the same year, the participation of students also increased from 567,000 to 800,000 and more than 6,800 schools throughout Malaysia had participated in the programme," he said.
