Melaka: The Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry will be introducing several new potential agricultural sub sectors that have wide markets locally and abroad. Its Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said among the new agricultural sub sectors are coral reef, honey bee, seaweed and sea cucumber.

He said the effort is aimed at attracting more youths to the new sub sectors which promises lucrative returns.

"All these sub sectors have already been cultivated in the country but their output is still low due to poor response from youths as these products are relatively new.

"These efforts have to be intensified as we do not need to be tied to traditional products or farming such as fruits, vegetables and fishing," he told reporters after opening the Melaka State-level 2015 Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPKN) and the Road to HPPKN, here, Friday.

Commenting further, Ismail said Melaka may be turned into a coral reef farming destination at Pulau Undan after Terengganu, if the area was found suitable for such cultivation. The Melaka HPPKN held over three days starting today offers sales of various agricultural and livestock products at the Sungai Rambai rest and recreation area.
