Kuala Lumpur: A rally against the newly-implemented Goods and Services Tax (GST) held in the city centre Friday, failed to reach the organiser's desired target of one million participants. As at 4pm, an estimated 10,000 people or less than one per cent of the intended target participated in the rally.

Clearly, the rally which started at 2.30pm, caused traffic jams at several key locations in the city centre, disrupting the daily lives of many people, including tourists.

Participants began to gather around the Sogo shopping centre, National Mosque, Masjid Jamek, Dataran Maybank, Central Market and Puduraya before walking to Dataran Merdeka and KLCC.

Some protesters were seen crashing into barriers put up by the police and other security personnel at the Dataran Merdeka, and also hurled smoke bombs at the glass door of a bank in the Masjid Jamek area.

There were also protesters who were dressed in black, creating chaos by hurling firecrackers and uttering harsh words.

However, the police managed to bring the situation under control.

A Kuala Lumpur traffic police spokesman said thus far, the situation was under control. A police helicopter was also hovering in the area to monitor the rally.

Many participants donned red t-shirts bearing anti-GST slogans while some opposition leaders were seen delivering speeches at several locations.

The participants were previously scheduled to gather in Dataran Merdeka.

However, they were seen trying to deceive the authorities by switching to KLCC, turning back to Dataran Merdeka before moving to KLCC. – Bernama
