UMS students continue to shine at Food Bowl Quiz

Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students from the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition have consecutively won the gold and silver medals in the Food Bowl Quiz Competition held in conjunction with the Food Science and Technology Seminar. In the recently concluded 9th Food Science and Technology Seminar held in UCSI, students of the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, UMS, won three gold medals, one each in the Undergraduate Food Bowl Quiz, Undergraduate Oratory, and Undergraduate Innovative Food Product Development competitions. A UMS postgraduate student also won a bronze for the Postgraduate Oral Presentation. ADVERTISEMENT As the winners, the students have represented Malaysia to the Food Bowl Quiz Competition held within the biannual Asean Food Conference for three consecutive times, in Bangkok (2011), Singapore (2013), and the upcoming conference in Manila on June 24–26. This year's competition saw participation from 14 universities throughout Malaysia. They were Universiti Malaysia Sabah, UCSI University, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Monash University Malaysia, Management and Science University, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Taylor's University, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, and Universiti Kuala Lumpur.This is the third time consecutively that UMS has won the first and second placements in the quiz which throws every possible questions in food science, food technology and nutrition fields to the students. ADVERTISEMENT The Food Bowl Quiz students were guided by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chye Fook Yee and postgraduate students. UMS students have also won two golds consecutively for the Undergraduate Oratory Competition. Students were given about 10 topics on current issues in food science and technology.

They were expected to talk about one of those topics, which would be decided just five minutes before the speech was to be delivered. They cannot refer to notes and cannot use any props to help deliver their speech. The Oratory Competition students were guided by Dr. Yasmin Ooi Beng Houi.In the Innovative Food Product Development Competition, the students must present a slide presentation of their food products to a panel of judges. They will also present their food product and poster at an exhibition. Judges will ask them various questions, which include their product ideas, technological innovation, sensory evaluation, product attributes and consumer appeal, novelty and uniqueness, packaging design and labelling. On top of all that, the winning product must of course be tasty too. This year, our students won the gold medal for this category. The Food Product Development students were guided by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifudin Md. Shaarani, Assoc Prof. Dr. Patricia Matanjun and, Dr. Wolyna Pindi. These successes, from 2006 to 2015 showed that graduates in food science and technology from UMS have continuously come out top among their peers from other universities competing in the competitions.
