Kota Kinabalu: Members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Kota Kinabalu are usually called to rescue strays in danger but on Sunday responded to a SOS of another kind.A resident in Taman Millennium Heights had a shock to find ticks crawling in nearly every corner of not only his porch but also along the pavement and grass near his house along Jalan Bundusan, here.

On further investigation, it was found that three neighbours were also battling armies of ticks crawling on their porch.

The resident, who wanted to be known as Ken, said he left food at the sidewalk for a dog which started roaming around the neighbourhood last week.

"At first we did not see the ticks but last Sunday I noticed ticks all over its body, prompting me to alert SPCA for assistance," he said.

He said his neighbour's dog had a similar problem.

SPCA volunteer Jenny Chung said they managed to rescue the first dog and remove more than 100 ticks lodged on the dog's body.

Also there to assist was SPCA Head of Education Committee Dr Roslee Abbas.

"The dog is now recovering and much healthier than before. However we will need to find a new owner for it as it was believed to have been abandoned by its owner," she said.

The SPCA volunteer team also took the second dog for treatment on Sunday. Chung said the dog's owner agreed to pay for the treatment, adding that SPCA advised him to spay the dog as well.

"After spaying, the dog will be healthier and prettier," she said, adding that about 90 per cent of the ticks were removed from the second dog.

"We also taught the dog owner how to kill ticks at their home and we hope they would do as we taught them," she said, adding that residents in the affected houses are now using medicine bought at the Sabah Animal Medical Centre to kill the ticks by spraying every corner of their houses.
