74 here for community integration programme

Penampang: The community integration programme in conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival this year would definitely prevent incidents such as the Taman Medan cross protest in future said Delin Liet Blaun, Director of National Unity and Integration Department Sabah.She was asked for comments at the Monsopiad Cultural Centre where 74 participants from Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Labuan were welcomed by the President and Supreme Council members of the Kadazan Society Sabah for lunch and brief cultural show.

Blaun said the participants were chosen from community leaders, Rukun Tetangga (neighbourhood association), media and social NGOs who will be the ambassadors of friendship at the grassroots level. They will share with their families and friends at home what they had experienced in Sabah, where everyone, regardless of race and religion, can eat at the same table and see for themselves the importance of unity and tolerance here.

The six-day programme from April 30- May 5 saw them stayed with foster families for four days in Keningau and two days in Kota Kinabalu. They participated at the launching of the state level Kaamatan at Tambunan and the district level at Keningau, attended Rukun Tetangga family day and participated in ethnic sports and preparation of ethnic food.

It was the first time for the Kadazan Society Sabah to be part of the programme.

Its President Datuk Marcel Leiking said that Kadazan families have been multiracial in nature for so long, that the children of mixed marriages with a Kadazan are definitely accepted as belonging to the race.

The Kadazans were also participants in the formation of Malaysia.

Present was District Officer of Penampang Luvita Koisun.

The closing ceremony for the programme was officiated by Tan Sri Joseph Kurup, the Minister of National Unity at a hotel in Kota Kinabalu with presentation of certificates to the participants in the evening.
