Kuching: Sarawak needs another five bridges to connect coastal areas with major towns.Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the projects, upon completion, would boost people's livehoods and stimulate growth in the state.

Presently, he said, there were two bridges connecting coastal areas with towns in Batang Sadong and Batang Samarahan.

"We will construct a bridge Igan. The project is in progress, as we are in the process of issuing tenders to build the bridge. The ministry has forwarded requests from the state government to build the other bridge to the economic Planning Unit.

"The approval of the request depends on the Federal Government's financial resource, as well as an assessment on the projects' urgency," he said after attending the state branch of the Malay Education Movement's second annual meeting at the Islamic Information Centre here.

He did not elaborate on the funds needed to contrust the bridges and their locations.

On the multi-billion-ringgit Pan Borneo Highway project launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last month, Fadillah said there would be changes in the initial phase of the contruction and expansion of the dual carriageway.

He said the development of the project, which was supposed to commence in Telok Melani, Lundu, near here, had been moved to Tanjung Datu. Following this, he said, there would be changes in the cost.

"The changes were made as the state government wanted to preserve the forest and natural resource in Tanjung Datu. We will determine the revised cost," he said, adding that the upgrading work in the initial stage of the project would be completed by November.

When officiating at the ground breaking of the project, Najib had said the Federal Government would set aside RM15 billion to complete the project.

Earlier, at the "Go Bald" cancer awareness programme at the shopping complex here, Fadillah endorsed his support for the campaign by shaving his head. He also donated RM10,000 to the State Children Cancer Association, which organised the event.
