S'wak, Bayer ink deal on hybrid rice

Kuching: The state Ministry of Modernisation of Agriculture will collaborate with Bayer CropScience to develop an area of 200 hectares in Tanjung Sarudu in the Sri Aman Division for high yielding hybrid padi cultivation.Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu said this was part of efforts towards enhancing the State's rice production and self-sufficiency using Bayer CropScience modern agronomic practices.Jabu who is also state Modernisation of Agriculture Minister, said this when witnessing the signing of a two-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the ministry and the company here Tuesday.ADVERTISEMENT He said under the agreement, Bayer would plant its Arize 6444 Gold and Arize Tej Gold varieties on a 50-ha site this year and the rest within 2016-2017. Jabu said upon getting similar success in this venture, the state government would consider getting Bayer CropScience to extend its method to other areas in the state."We will also engage other agencies like Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) which has also produce equally encouraging results in its padi planting project," he said. – Bernama
