Kuala Lumpur: Leading telecommunications provider, Celcom Axiata Bhd, is supportive of the suggestion made by Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek that consumers should receive RM10 worth of prepaid air time when they purchase RM10 pre-paid reload value. Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly expressed 100 per cent support for the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for prepaid services.

The minister had earlier announced his intention to bring the matter up with cellular companies, over the next few days, to determine the mechanism for the "RM10-for RM10" formula.

"We still don't know how his review would be like, but we will give full support for the benefit of Malaysians at large.

"I am very confident that our minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek will find the best solution for all," Shazalli told Bernama in a telephone interview.

The minister said once an agreement has been reached with the companies, he would present it to the Cabinet and obtain their greenlight before implementing the new price system as soon as possible.

The Royal Malaysian Customs Department recently issued a directive to telecommunication companies to revert the pricing of prepaid cards to the previous pre-GST prices.

However, the directive, which was supposed to have been enforced on May 1, was put on hold after the Chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Datuk Seri Dr Halim Shafie made a statement that prepaid cards would continue to be sold with GST charges included. He added that it will be almost impossible for service providers to implement the required changes at short notice. – Bernama
