Tawau: A number of Ministry of Health (MoH) staff have not pledged to be organ donors because they do not know the importance of registering as a donor.Tawau Hospital Director Dr Norlimah Arsad said the matter should be addressed urgently as the country, especially MoH, had initiated transplant services since 1975.

"However, public awareness, including that of the staff of MoH itself, is still not at a satisfactory level.

"Therefore, efforts towards changing attitude and public acceptance have to be initiated more comprehensively, consistent with the Government's intention to create a caring society and have a first-class mentality just like other developed countries," she said.

According to her, as of February, the number of organ pledgers in Malaysia stood at 286,123 which is about 0.9 per cent of the total population of the country.

The number pledgers showed a slight increase over the last three years, she said when opening the Workshop on Training of Trainers (ToT) Organ Donation Awareness Campaign 2015 at the Dewan Arena Belia.

Her speech was delivered Assistant Director (Management) of Tawau Hospital, Pang Chun Shong.

The workshop was participated by officers and employees of the staff of Tawau Hospital and members of MoH in Kunak and Semporna.

It saw a total of 69 individuals registering as organ donor pledgers.

In the meantime, Norlimah also urged all parties such as government agencies and the private sector, non-governmental organisations and the media to play their respective roles in the success of organ donation campaigns at all levels.
