Kurup: Review the duties of Esscom

Keningau: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup urged the Government to review the Eastern Sabah Security Command's (Esscom) duties following the latest incident where a man and a woman were kidnapped by gunmen in Sandakan. Kurup, who is Pensiangan MP, hoped the government would investigate how the incident could have happened. He said this during a media conference after officiating the Rukun Tetangga Baginda Charity Run at the Keningau Sports Complex here, on Saturday.

Kurup said the government should improve the level of security and every department involved should take serious action as this was not the first time such incident has taken place. He hoped the matter would be resolved soon for the benefit of the people and for the security of the State especially in terms of economic development and tourism industry. Kurup did not elaborate when asked about reports that the gunmen could have had "inside help".Meanwhile, the charity run which was held from 6.30am to 9am, drew more than 1,000 participants from 79 residential committee throughout the State, including from other Asean countries.

Kurup applauded the programme which he described as very good and that it should be continued not only in the district but throughout the country, adding it also played a role in strengthening unity and peace which eventually lead to a successful community. Also present were Abd Hadi Mohd Salleh who represented the National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) Director, Rukun Tetangga Baginda Chairman Ahamin Jalim who is also the Charity Run Organising Chairman, Keningau District Officer Yusop Osman and District Police Chief DSP Douglas Nyeging Taong among others.

Kurup also handed out Award Certificates to the winner of the Keningau Charity Run before heading to Apin-Apin located some 16km from Keningau where he officiated the Kaamatan Festival at the Rukun Tetangga Baginda- level.
