All Saints emerges winner at English Debate

Kota Kinabalu: SM All Saints, representing the Kota Kinabalu District, emerged victorious in the recent 2015 Sabah State-level Parliamentary Style English Debate Competition. Eight schools took part in the competition held at SMKA Tun Said, Kota Belud from April 27 to 30.Members of the winning team were Jonathan Lam Chun-Yung ( Form 5 ), Karshni Claudia Guvalakrisnan ( Form 3 ), Sheryl Lim Siew Quin ( Form 3 ), Harrish Krishna A/L Haori Krishnan ( Form 3 ) and Nurul Firzanah bt Mohd Darwis ( Form 3 ).

The teacher advisors are Philonia Jane Raymond Bintoh, Azzuhri Busu Leman and Norjaliah Mulih.In the first round on the motion, "This House Believes That Mobile Phones Are Not Safe" as the Government, the Kota Kinabalu team won against a team from Lahad Datu. In the second round on the motion, "This House Would Reintroduce Corporal Punishment in School", the team again won the match. The Kota Kinabalu team advanced into the semi-final round as the Government, on the motion, "This House Believes That There Is More Intellect Than Emotion In Our Way of Life". It was also another victory over the Sandakan team. And in the final round on the motion, "This House Believes That Economic Prosperity Is More Important Than Environment Protection", as the Government, the Kota Kinabalu team emerged as the overall champion against a team from Beaufort. Jonathan Lam Chun-Yung did the school proud by being adjudged the Best Debater in the final competition.

According to Azzuhri, discipline, focus and perseverance are the driving force that ensures consistency in the team' s performance from the start. "The students shared information and helped one another. They worked as one to ensure glorious success to the team", added Philonia. Congratulating the team, SM All Saints principal Tiong Ai Ping said that the five students have brought glory to the school and would inspire budding debaters to excel. "We have a new team of debaters this year. Their diligence, determination, consistency in preparation and a very good team spirit have contributed to their brilliant achievement in this year's state-level debate competition, " added the principal, Tiong Ai Ping.

SM All Saints, which was the second runner-up in the 2014 national level competition held in Sarawak, also the second runner-up in the 2013 competition in Perak, the first runner-up in the 2012 competition in the Federal Territory of Labuan, will once again represent Sabah in this year's national-level debate competition scheduled to be held in Kelantan later this month.
