CM urges more O and G opportunities
Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman on Thursday called on Petroleum Nasional (Petronas) to provide more opportunities to local contractors to take up work in the oil and gas sector. He said many local contractors in Sabah want to learn, take part and get involved and, thus, it is important to provide them any form of work.

"I'm sure many local contractors here want to be given the opportunity to be involved … that is why, I have always requested from the Prime Minister and the Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Petronas to provide us the opportunity and room to be involved in the industry," he said during the Business Opportunities in the Oil and Gas Industry Seminar, here.

"Luckily, our requests had been very much welcomed by the Chairman of Petronas. For us, this aspect is very much important and close to the hearts of many Sabahans," he added.

Towards this end, Musa said it was timely for Petronas to hold the business opportunities seminar here, which included a licensing and registration workshop.

He believed the workshop will boost the number of local companies licensed with the oil firm.

"The seminar is very significant and meaningful to the government's goal to further expand the benefits brought by the oil and gas industry in Sabah.

"It covers the business opportunities and the skill-building of local companies which are capable of contributing to the oil and gas industry here," he said.

Musa also welcomed the step taken by Petronas to set up a registration and licensing counter here at the Petronas Tower in Sembulan, which will provide consultancy for the process of contractor licensing.

"I believe this will encourage more companies to take part in the businesses available in the local oil and gas sector which is rapidly expanding in Sabah," he said.

Meanwhile, Musa said it is also important local companies build their own capacity by taking up local contracts before venturing further in the field or competing in the global stage.

He said it is the government's hope for agencies or Government Linked Companies in Sabah to be part of or become the main player in the oil and gas field, upstream or downstream.

He also congratulated Petronas which has appointed two bumiputera companies to take part in the oil firm's vendor development programme, here.
