Lahad Datu: A package wrapped in brown paper with the words 'Kepada Mat Bom daripada Bapak Jamalul Kiram' (To Mat Bom From Jamalul Kiram) written on it created panic among commuters and bus personnel who found it inside the storage compartment of an express bus here on Wednesday. The package which measured 3x8 inches wide and five inches high was initially suspected to be linked to the Sulu incursion incident in the district two years ago, prompting the bus driver to alert police for fear that it may contain explosive devices.

State Criminal Investigations Department Chief Datuk Salehhudin Abd Rahman on Thursday said the Lahad Datu police headquarters received a call from the driver at about 10.30pm.

"Preliminary investigations found that the bus was heading towards Kota Kinabalu from the Semporna Bus Terminal and made a stopover at the Lahad Datu Bus Terminal at Fajar Centre to pick up passengers.

"While unloading several items inside the bus storage compartment, the bus driver discovered the box which was loaded in Semporna and immediately informed the police to avoid any untoward incident," he said.

Salehhudin said a Bomb Disposal Unit team went to the scene and blasted the box only to discover later that it contained an alarm clock.

He said police have identified the person responsible for sending the package, adding that the person will called in to facilitate investigations.

He added that they inspected 22 passengers on the bus and five of them were detained under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1969 for not having valid documents.
