Plan to open 25,000 acres of coconut plantation: Wong
Johor: The State Sabah goverment plans to open between 10,000 and 25,000 acres of new coconut plantation by working with local farmers in the rural areas.Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Junz Wong said his ministry will work together with rural farmers in order to give the economy of scale for Linaco Company to set up their processing plants, collecting centres as well as training facilities in Sabah.

He said Linaco is the largest coconut manufacturer in Malaysia, which owns few processing plants that process up to 500,000 nuts a day.

"The State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (Mafi) is set for strategic partnership with Linaco to develop and help Sabah farmers develop coconut farming.

"The first step on materialising the idea was to set up a coconut seed garden by using superior mother plant to be regulated by the Department of Agriculture (DOA) in order to produce sufficient planting materials to meet the demands," he said, here, Saturday.

Junz visited the Linaco Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd, coconut production factory at Batu Pahat, Johor and were briefed and given tour of the factory by its Managing Directot Jio Ling.

He was accompanied by Political Secretary Rakam Sijim, Public Relations Secretary Kevin Chong and other officers. Also present was Sabah Agriculture Department Director Datuk Idrus Shafie.

Junz said his ministry is set to cooperate with Linaco to develop coconut plantation and its downstream industries in Sabah.

He said Sabah is eyeing to export wide range of agro-products in future including coconuts via Linaco branding with ready international markets. - Hayati Dzulkifli
