Work to ensure unity, Muslims told
Papar: Muslims in Papar have been urged to work together to ensure enduring multi-racial unity in line with the example set by Prophet Muhammad.

Speaking while launching the district's Maulud Nabi celebration on Saturday, Papar MP Datuk Aidi Mokhtar said such courtesy would benefit not only oneself but also the whole society.

"Today's Maulud Nabi procession and gathering is a syiar Islam [Islamic symbol] that unites our thoughts and actions based on consultation and consensus," he said.

Aidi, who is also Sabah Minister of Law and Native Affairs, said the theme of this year's Maulud Nabi celebration that touched on kindness to the whole of society should be translated to Muslims' daily life.

Aidi also urged Muslims and leaders to apply in their daily life the Quranic teachings on fairness and kindness and to emulate the Prophet's leadership in resolving personal and communal challenges.

Aidi's call apparently came after a protest memorandum in Tawau against the Christmas and New Year celebrations organised by the area's MP and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew earlier this week.

The Muslim groups, comprising associations and political parties in the district, said in a statement that they strongly opposed the celebrations, claiming that they contained elements to spread Christianity.

Sabah Warisan and PKR later denied involvement of their Tawau and Kalabakan divisions in issuing the joint-memorandum.

Later, Tawau PAS chief Mohamad Husain apologised to the Warisan and PKR divisions for including them in the memorandum, saying there had been a technical error.

Mohamad said he hoped all quarters will let the matter close following their open apology. - Zam Yusa
