LAHAD DATU: Four classes with 117 students from Form 1 to Form 4 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Desa Kencana in Felda Sahabat, near here, had to have their lessons at the school canteen after one of the school blocks faced the threat of slope failure.
The President of the Parents and Teachers Association of the school, Datu Ibrahim Datu Abdul Karim, said the particular block was vacated since the school session began earlier this year to ensure the safety of the students and their teachers.

“It was learnt that the Lahad Datu Public Works Department (JKR) had conducted a preliminary check on Tuesday and found the slope behind the school building had collapsed.
“The JKR also asked for a building near the collapsed slope to be vacated by the school until the slope repair works are completed,” he said when met by reporters, here, Friday.
The slope failure problem was believed to have been caused by continuous rain since the beginning of the year. It also disrupted the learning session of 17 special education students since their class was located in the building, as well as the Etika Rumah Tangga (ERT) teachers’ room.
Therefore, Datu Ibrahim urged the authorities to quickly resolve the problem so that the affected students could continue their learning session in a comfortable classroom.

“So far, the Felda Sahabat management has taken the initial steps to provide a contingency provision to repair the affected area.
“So we hope the repair process would go smoothly and quickly,” he said.

A survey found that the drain at the back of the affected building was ‘upraised’ by 1.5 metres from its original position.
The two-session school houses 1,700 students from Form 1 to Form 5 with 124 teachers while there are 29 classrooms for 59 class sessions.
