Beware the Ranau hot spots, motorists told
RANAU:  Ranau District Police Chief, DSP Mohd Shahrul Bin Datuk Hj Abdul Wahab urged all motorists and road users to be extra careful especially in areas identified as hot spots for motor vehicle accidents.

He said during the holiday break road users need to be most wary when driving through several “hot spot” routes like the the Ranau-Telupid road where accidents are prone in these areas.

“From kilometer 1-30 of Jalan Ranau–Sagindai and from kilometer 48 near Matupang to kilometer 68 near Miruru are considered hot spots. Special attention to be given to the road in front of the ‘timbang sawit’ in Nalapak, where the road is narrow and going downhill.

“Other areas are, Jalan Ranau-Tamparuli from kilometer 1 to 22 near Bundu Tuhan, Jalan Ranau – Tambunan from kilometer 1-7, and Jalan Ranau – Kota Marudu in kilometer 6 near Bongkud.

“So when we observe, these are the areas where accidents are prone to occur, regardless of if it’s day or night time,” he said when launching the Ops Selamat campaign at the Petronas fuel station in Kg Kilimu.

He said the Ops Selamat held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year Festival 2019 is held generally to control the traffic as well as to reduce congestion during the festivity across the district.

In the Ops Selamat this time around, he said that two officers and nine policemen will be on duty to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety throughout the CNY Festival here.

Mohd Shahrul said that statistics comparison between 2018 and 2017 showed that fatal accidents in the district has increased mostly due to the increase in the numbers of vehicles on the road.

“For Fatalities or Section 41(A) Road Transport Act 1987 a total of 19 cases were recorded in 2018, while only five cases in 2017. This is a distinctive increase of 14 cases.

“The overall numbers also showed an increase, where 378 cases were recorded in 2018 compared to 361 cases in 2017. The issuance of summons also showed a high increase where 5,578 summons were issued in 2017 and 6,775 in 2018,” he said.

He said the force will continue to give attention to offences like speeding, using mobile phones while driving, driving on emergency lanes and “cue jumping”, among others.

Meanwhile, Mohd Shahrul said IPD Ranau will also ensure the safety of the houses left empty by their owners who return to respective villages during the holidays by increasing patrolling in housing areas.

“We urge members of the public to fill up the “Borang Balik Kampung” so that we can increase patrolling in the areas concerned.

“Apart from that people could also send notification of vacant homes during the holidays through the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) which they can register through our officers,” he said.

Also present were Chief Parliamentary Liaison Officer Ranau, Lajim Hj Momen and  Chief Education Officer Ranau, Siti Hamne Hashim. - Clarence GD
