Cocoa boost for the Ranau growers
RANAU: Cocoa smallholders in the district will soon become members of the Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM) Cooperative when it is materialised soon, paving the way for higher income for the commodity here.

Ranau MP Jonathan Yasin said the proposal for LKM to venture into the cooperative arena through the Program Pembangunan Rantaian Kluster Koko (PPRKK) is brilliant as it would ensure the sustainability of the industry today as well as in time to come.

“The PPRKK programme is identified as a game-changer manoeuvre which takes into consideration the activities of planting to processing of cocoa product, or like what we call the ‘farm to table’ concept.

“The programme is considered a high-impact move in the 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK-11), that is listed under the Dasar Industri Komoditi Negara (DIKN) which is to develop the sustainability of the cocoa cluster.

“Now Act 343 of the LKM Incorporation does not allow LKM to run a business. Towards that end, a cooperative entity was suggested in order to implement the monitoring management as well as the Cocoa Cluster Chain operation,” he said.

Jonathan who is also LKM Chairman was speaking when officiating the Program Ideasi Penubuhan Koperasi LKM workshop that was held in Hotel Perkasa Kundasang on Monday.

“I hope this three-day workshop will be fruitful and resulted in the production of ideas and modus operandi towards the formation of the LKM Cooperative. We hope all the agencies involve would give guidance to us in achieving this noble quest,” he said.

Also present were LKM Head Director, Datin Norhaini Udin, Director of Malaysia Cooperative Commission (SKM), Hj Umar Sarim bin Saidin, Director of the Farming and Agro Based Sector of Maktab Koperasi Malaysia (MKM), Zulkiflee bin Aspon, Deputy Director General (Operation) LKM, Datuk Dr Ramle Hj Kasin,  representatives from Angkasa, Rosmawati binti Zul, representative from Ministry of Primary Industries (Cocoa and Pepper Development unit), Firma Azura Ekaputri binti Marzuki, representative from the Koperasi Penanam Sawit Mampan Malaysian Palm Oil Board, Dr Zaki Aman and others. - Clarence G Dol
