Reviving Tenom-Melalap rail service
Tenom: Industrial Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony said the revival of the Tenom-Melalap railway service, like during colonial time, is no longer a dream as Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal is expected to officiate the construction on March 31.

He said the State Government sees the benefit of reviving the service especially for agropreneurs who will not only be able to market their produce at much cheaper transportation cost but up to the State Capital. Not only that, he said the Melalap new township will be upgraded to a full district not long from now, as the Chief Minister had, in principle, agreed to give the status if the township continues to progress.

Anthony said he has applied for an allocation of over RM10 million from the State Government and hoped the upgrading of the railway track can be implemented next year. The amount included purchasing new locomotive and carriages which are expected to arrive in May.

“We will stop using the old locomotive and carriages because we believe they are no longer safe to be used,” he said after officiating the presentation of letters of appointment for customary leaders at Sri Antenom, here.

Asked on the illegal settlements on railway’s reserve land, Anthony said if it involves local people they would be assisted by the Government to get a house under the Hardcore Poor People Housing Programme (PPRT).

“But if it involves foreigners they will be referred to the District Settlement Committee chaired by the Tenom District Office,” he said.

Those receiving appointment letters are two for district chiefs (Melalap dan Kemabong), eight native chiefs (five for Kemabong and three Melalap), and 29 native chief representatives (13 Kemabong and 16 Melalap).

Also 43 village heads for Kemabong constituency and 41 for Melalap, as well as four Chinese Kapitans for Kemabong and for Melalap, 10.

Anthony advised the customary leaders concerned to perform their duties with full dedication, tolerance and fairness.

Kemabong Assemblyman Jamawi Jaafar, Tenom MP Noorita Sual, District Officer Sungkim Rumangun Tenom OCPD Tusib Tulas, Sabah Native Affairs Council President Datuk Saadilah Abdillah and Law and Native Affairs Ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary Jasli Tindih, among others, were also present.
