Teach environ conservation early
RANAU: Education on environmental conservation must be conveyed at the early stages so that the future generation will grow up knowing how crucial it is to take good care of mother earth.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Assaffal P Alian said it is funny how some quarters like to view any environmental programme held, especially in schools, as unimportant, when the survival of the human race actually depends on this effort.

“We must teach our children to have the will to ensure the environment in our country is always clean, balanced and safe. This is for our own interests and goodness as well as future generations.

“We must understand that there are certain values in the environment which are very important to ensure the well-being of human life. Every individual must be responsible for the pollution and environmental damage which resulted from himself.

“When we throw garbage everywhere, this is an act of ruining our own home because this is the ground where we have the opportunity to be born, where we study and grow, and later on looking for the happiness for our lives and those we love,” he explained.

Assaffal was speaking when officiaitng the Program Pendidikan Alam Sekitar Untuk Sekolah Rendah dan Pra-Sekolah [KEEDs] that was held at SK Kauluan Ranau on Thursday.

“I was informed that this school was taken as an adopted school for the Sekolah Rakan Alam Sekitar (SERASI) Programme in Sabah for the year 2018 by the Department of Environmental Protection.

“This is an excellent opportunity because I believe in a school like this to get a solid and organised guidance from one of the departments which is leading the SERASI in the state,” he said.

In the event, Assaffal led other distinguished guests as well as children in the school for the tree planting event and later on listened to environmental talks by the programme organiser.

Also present were Director of the Department Environmental Protection, Hj Mohd Yusrie Abdullah, Ranau Education Officer, Siti Hamni Hashim, Assistant District Officer (Administration), Yusri Ismail Yusof, SK Kauluan Headmaster, Ramlee Abu, teachers, parents and other local leaders.
