SANDAKAN: An elderly man who has been living alone for seven years in a ramshackle hut at Taman Damai, Mile 4, can look forward to something better.
Chong Yong Keong, 60, was recently visited by Sandakan Parliament Liaison Officer Amsi Liew and Elopura Community Development Officer Jason Pang along with an officer from the Sandakan Welfare Department.

The man lives alone as he never got married and had built the hut out of waste material under shady trees since.
His plight came to light and prompted Amsi, Jason and the Department to meet him so as to render assistance.
According to Amsi, the old man previously worked as a welder, however after retiring, he could not afford to rent a proper house and maintained daily meals.
“We were told that uncle Chong depends on meals given by good samaritans around the residential area of Taman Damai,” he said.

Amsi said the man is living in a very unhygienic place where the hut is not suitable for him to live.
“We are very sad when we checked his hut. Therefore, we decided to bring Uncle Chong for medical check-up at Hospital Duchess of Kent.

“After the medical check-up, we are going to accommodate him at the Sri Harapan Folks Home at Mile 5,” said Amsi.
