Drugs: Mum, daughter among 57 held
KENINGAU: : A mother and her daughter were among 11 people nabbed by enforcement officers from the Keningau National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) in an operation here Monday night. Fifty seven were detained statewide.

“The mother and daughter, aged 45 and 17 respectively, were detained at their home after they tested positive for syabu,” said district Nada officer and head of the operation, Azry Golbin @ Azmi.

He the 11 detained comprised seven men and four women, aged between 17 and 45.

“A man who tried to prevent himself from being arrested by hiding in a tank filled with water on the upper floor of a shophouse almost drowned,” he said.

Azry said the man would be charged in court and face up to three years­ jail and three strokes of the cane, on conviction, for drug abuse while still under Nada surveillance.

“All those detained tested positive for syabu and two of the suspects acted aggressively against the enforcement officers,” he said, adding they were all detained under Section 3(1) of the Drug Addiction, Treatment and Rehabilitation Act 1983.

According to him, the operation was based on public information as well as intelligence made by his officers for a week.

He advised the public to be sensitive to drug-related problems and immediately report any such goings-on in their respective areas to prevent the problems from becoming more difficult to control and trigger various other crime activities.

In KUNAK, police rounded up 31 people and arrested 11 of them after being found positive for syabu during the “Ops Sarang” around Kg Pangi, Wednesday.

Kunak District Police Chief Supt Baharin Md Tahir among them was a 42-year-old foreigner with a permanent resident status, who was picked up at an unnumbered house where 5.84gm of syabu was found hidden in a plastic bottle inside the suspect’s bedroom.

In a second raid in the same operation, a 38-year-old local was arrested after syabu w

as found in a cigarette box in his room.

“In the ‘Op Sarang’ conducted in Kg Pangi, four people were investigated under Section 6(1)(C) of the Immigration Act for documents-related offences,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the “Ops Sarang” conducted on March 6 at Kg Kunak Tiga, 13 of 24 people rounded up were found to positive also for syabu.

“Among those arrested in the operation at Kg Kunak Tiga was a 50-year-old man without documents,” he said, adding that 5.30gm of syabu was found stored in a cigarette box in the suspect’s room. Baharin said the same operation was carried out on Feb 25 in Kg Pangkalan and Kg JKR Kunak.

In the operation, 33 people were inspected and 12 of them were also found positive for syabu.

“This operation is for detecting those involved in drug distribution and use,” he said.

In KOTA BELUD, police arrested 12 local men after they were found positive for drugs during “Ops Sarang Ketiga” in two hotspot areas, Wednesday.

The raid from 5am to 10am was carried out by 43 members and officers from the Kota Belud District Police Headquarters.

Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said police rounded up a total of 21 people in Kampung Taun Gusi and Kampung Kuala Abai.

“The suspects’ houses were also inspected before they were all taken to the police station for urine tests which showed 12 of them, aged between 17 and 50, were positive for syabu,” he said.

Mohad Zaidi said the police also seized three grammes of syabu worth RM450 during the raid and the cases would be investigated under Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

In RANAU, Nada officers nabbed three local men during the “Ops Cegah” in a village Monday night.

AADK Ranau Chief Hazrie Attin said arrest of the three, aged between 23 and 29, followed public complaints on drug abuse activities.

“Following the tip-offs, we conducted a week-long surveillance around Kg Kundasang Ranau before raiding the area.

“Two of the arrests involve the suspects who were caught in surprise in their homes, while another suspect was hiding inside his vehicle before our officers were able to track him down.”

According to Hazrie, those arrested individuals were found positive for syabu after initial urine tests. - Johan Aziz, Ibrahim Tabir, R. Gonzales and Clarence George Dol
